Europe Trip Part Three: Gijion, Santander, & Bilbao Spain

Day 8 June 28th: We woke up crazy early and flew into Gijon, Spain.  We drove around the city and we walked the area that Shane was in. I couldn't believe how much he walked each day. We visited Catalina. She was the last person that Shane was teaching before he came home. She now wants to take the discussions again. Then we went to se Lorena and Jociline. These ladies were spunky and really made me laugh, even though I didn't really know everything they were talking about. What a beautiful family they have.

Day 9 June 29th: We walked the beautiful beach and went to the "toilet bowl" (Atleast that's what Shane calls it). Then we went to Covadonga, the chapel in the mountain. It was really neat. We also went to the Picos de Europa and the lagos at the top of the mountains. The Pyrenees Mountains are gorgeous. I loved the cows that had bells on all throughout the mountains because it sounded so pretty! We also went to the Congas de Onis bridge and then we drove to Santander.

Day 10 June 30th: After staying in a cute little bed and breakfast in Santander, we walked the beach and walked out to Magdalena Palace. Magdalena Palace was a place for the royal family to vacation and visit for recreation and sporting activities. On our way out of the city we stopped to see Fernando Salgado (the branch president) and the missionaries. In the evening we drove to Bilbao and stayed with Soiartxe and Idoia. They are the cutest couple, and were so sweet to let us stay with them.

The view was spectacular! I loved everything about being on the ocean. Shane's mission was beautiful.

Fernando Salgado (the branch president) and the missionaries. Please excuse my crazy outfit!... it started raining and I was freezing and didn't have my jacket. so I layered the only things I had : /
Hydrangea grows everywhere and it is absolutely amazing. Eye candy everywhere you look :)
Shane couldn't wait to get his hands on Telepizza again. It was pretty good.
We stayed with Soiartxe and Idoia for 3 nights. They treated us like Royalty.
Day 11 July 1st: We went to Church in Las Arenas and Shane's parents met us there. (They flew in the night before from London.) I loved going to this branch. The spirit was so strong, even though I didn't understand a lot. There were a lot of people there that we were looking forward to seeing. Shane served in this area for seven months. Everyone was so sweet and nice to us. We saw Scarly, Bernardo, & their grandma Mirien. Shane baptized Scarly and Bernardo 5 years ago. They were all so happy to see him. We also saw Edurne. She is a fabulous branch member and was always so sweet to Shane. After church we had a fancy paella dinner with Jesus and Lola and some of the Martin family. We went on a beautiful walk on the coastal cliffs in Las Arenas. And watched the World Cup with some true Spanish fans (good thing Spain won).

Watching the World Cup final. It got pretty crazy!
Day 12 July 2nd:  We went to San Juan de Gaztulagatxe. A monument built for John the Baptist. People say he sailed into Spain and landed here. It was pretty stinkin' cool if you ask me. Then we drove to Gernica and on the way we stopped to see Mundocka. It is the longest curling left wave in the world. We finished the night with dinner at the Bustillo's.

We made it to the church to ring the bell.

Gernica, Spain. The city that inspired Picasso's painting after it was bombed.
Two different candy shops remembered Shane from five years ago. He went to this place every day.

 Dinner with the Bustillo Family
Day 13 July 3rd: We went to the Guggenheim and the Puente Colgante (the world's oldest transporter bridge). We visited with Deisy, a girl that Shane baptized. We also went to see the Lobo family, another family that he baptized. Those girls were adorable.
